Did you know, Mercury Fillings Can Crack Your Teeth?
A patient had a visible crack in the enamel on the outside cusp of their pre-molar which was sensitive to bite on. When the old silver filling was removed, the crack was visible under the old restoration. The amalgam acts as a wedge through the center of the tooth. Biting pressure over the years eventually causes small fractures which sometimes lead to larger fractures. These cracks and fissures make crowning the tooth necessary and sometimes result in the loss of the tooth altogether.
One of the most talked about issues in dentistry today revolves around the use of silver fillings (amalgams) in our mouths. Do we need to take out the old mercury-laden silver fillings and replace them, or are there better restorative dentistry options that do not pose any potential risk to our health?
Dr. Oz had a segment called “Toxic Teeth: Are Your Silver Fillings Making You Sick?”. Guests Dr. Gerald Curatola, Dr. Jonathan B. Levine, Dr. Brent Moelleken, Dr. Michael Niccole, and Dr. Alicia Salzer debate this issue.
What we do know if that the old silver fillings can cause fractures. If you know someone who still has silver fillings, encourage them to call Dr. Terry Bass OKC dentist at 405-848-7780 and have them checked out before they encounter any cracks and fissures.
